Oh look, I have something new for you today: a delicate collection from Sayuri Nail Polish! I know, I know...I am not the person you think of when you imagine delicate soft shades...but I love a good neutral and this is a whole collection of them! I even know some of these words! My kids did ballet for a few years, and I did try to pay attention.
(promotional samples ahead)
Chassé | two coats
This is a pale, cool pink diffuse holo with teeny gold-pink flashing flakes. It has a muted, grown-up feel and could definitely be a work-appropriate/all ages shade. The formula was a little streaky over my latex base, as all of these were, but it behaved nicely over my regular Gelous base. So a note of caution: if you use a peely base, take a little extra time and add a layer of regular base. You'll be glad you did.
Plié | two coats
This is that ballet color. It looks like a peachy nude on my fair skin, but this is the color I imagine when someone says "ballet pink". All of my girls outfits were this pink...though the tights were permanently stained at the knees and feet. Kids, man. This polish has a soft diffuse holo and icy silver microflake-things that really remind me of the little chiffon ruffle around the littlest leotard.
Glissade | two coats
This medium cornflowery blue is another that is almost perfectly evocative of the blue leotard my daughter wore in her second level class. This has more diffuse holo but it also has platinum flakes that add a little life. It has a creamier formula than the previous two shades, but it still needs a regular base instead of a latex peely. From the swatches I have seen, this is a universal flattererer.
Échappé | two coats
This is the sophisticated vampy shade that everyone needs. Navy has always felt very adult and fashiony to me, and this is such a nice wearable version. It is very dark, but the foilish flakes liven it up and keep it from falling into the "is that black?" It has a slight violet tinge at the edges, and almost feels like a duochrome sometimes. I dig it.
Arabesque | two coats
Anyone surprised that this is my favorite? Yeah...you definitely shouldn't be. This is one of my favorite sorts of colors, this minky taupe with a slight lavender blush...yes. The spring green metallic flakes just give it a little oomph and set it apart. If you wanted something kinda moody, this would be the one for you.
If purple isn't your bag, how about a regular warm gray? This is a chinchilla gray jelly with holo flakes and soft shimmer. This might be my second favorite. The formula is squishy and the tiniest bit sheer...but the color is excellent and modern and I love it.
Grand Jeté | two coats
This is a creamy black with a wash of holo and gold foily flakes. In my notes, I called it a "disco alligator" which made me snort-laugh when I re-read it. But I stand by that. This is like a good pair of alligator shoes (or fakes, in my case) or tortoise shell sunglasses. I imagine that Audrey Hepburn would wear a color like this.
Ballet is, for me, a nostalgic thing. I was never lucky enough to try it, but my girls both did. I remember their tiny, wacky buns and the silly grins they wore as they spun around waiting for class to start. Nowadays, we are very much into gymnastics/softball/roller derby...but I have fond memories with all these colors. Which one is your favorite? Let me know below.
