The Oort Cloud is a "theoretical" cloud of tiny, icy planets and comets that surrounds our little corner of the galaxy. It was named for the Dutch astronomer Jan Oort, who is pretty much the heavy-weight when it comes to understanding our galaxy. It is thought to be incredibly immense and stretch out beyond 100,000 AU, or nearly a quarter of the way to Proxima Centauri (our nearest neighbor). To put that into some kind of perspective, our happy little globe sits 1 AU from our sun. I can't even with that distance.
It boggles my mind that we don't even know for certain that it is out there, because it is just so far away. Some astronomers think that it is the source of all of our long-period comets, like the Hale-Bop comet which is the current record holder for naked-eye visibility. There was some talk about making a probe to see if it really exists like we think it does...but you know NASA these days. Maybe Voyager will tell us something someday?

I think this was a great way to bring The Planets back to life. I always wanted to keep that series around, but I couldn't think of a way to make it make sense. Well, every day our universe gets a bit bigger...why can't my nail art?
