Hot Topic has a place in my heart. It was my mid-90's mecca for all things "edgy". It was my source for weird clothes, chokers, off-the-wall cosmetics, and gothic prom dresses...as an old lady now, I have a hard time looking at what it has become, but at least it still has pretty nail polish.
For my birthday, the kids decided to take me out for some shopping. We were also getting ready to travel for a wedding, so I had a small list anyway. We stopped into Hot Topic because my tiny minions are Whovians who also love Minecraft and Disney. It's like that store is aimed right at them. While they effused over blocky playsets, I poured over the sale cosmetics. I managed to find a few things.
Violet with Blue Glitter
This is a nearly-neon jelly packed with multiple sizes of deep sky-blue hexes. I used three coats and a light layer of Seche Vite and ended up with the pics below. Next time, I might use China Glaze Violet Vibes or 77NL Radioactive Orchid as undies for this...but maybe not. This polish behaved wonderfully, and it was just awesome in general.
Splatter Pink Blue
I love this one. It is a cool neon pink jelly packed with the the same blue hexes as the so creatively named Violet With Blue Glitter I shared above. There is a newer indie out there that looks just like this, but for certain reasons I can't buy it. Thankfully...there is this one to scratch the itch. I used three coats followed by a thick coat of Seche Vite. Somehow, this one was slightly more lumpy...but I don't even think I care. It is a ton of fun and perfect for summer.
AB Shimmer
Blackheart needs to hire me to name their stuff...because wtf guys? This is a medium purple polish jam-packed with gold flakes. I love the duochrominess of it. It almost reminds me of a less-dazzling version of Zoya Faye...or really any foily Zoya. I used two coats and a thin layer of Seche Vite, and everything was smooth and happy.
Lime Splatter Glow
This neon tennis ball glitter-stuffed jelly was the only downer of the quartet I picked. I think I will definitely need undies for this one next time. I wore three coats below, and two layers of topper...and it was neither opaque nor smooth. Sadness. BUT...it does have other attributes...
Oh yes. It glows. Wonderfully, in fact. This was taken at night with a quick charge by my black light. But it actually does charge pretty easily with a regular light. I dropped a few bits here and there on my polishing table, and whenever I turn my light out, I giggle a little at the glowing freckles sprinkled across my surface.
And for science, here is a quickie shot of all four polishes under a black light...and immediately after. That neon pink reacts wonderfully, as does the tennis ball shade...but not the violet. I wish violet neons behaved better in UV light...it is one of my favorite colors, but it falls so flat under UV.
So what is your verdict? I know, these aren't as amazing as the Liquid Euphoria polishes of days-gone-by...but maybe in 10 years, people will be falling over themselves for the glowing glitter-packed jelly? Who knows? I just know that whenever they have that BOGO sale...I will be stopping to take a peek.
I've got the pink and the purple shimmer, but I haven't used them yet.
ReplyDeleteI am really glad that pink one exists though, because I love it and cannot purchase it for mentioned reasons either (...as well? shut up, grammar).
The purple shimmer is such a Zoya knock-off...but in a cooler bottle. And you need that violet. You do. I promise.
DeleteI haven't been to a hot topic in ages! I love these polishes though, definitely need to make a trip down to the mall for these.
ReplyDeletemy kids love all the minecraft and doctor who stuff. We're in there once a month!
DeleteLove theeeessseeeee! I want the neon yellow one just because well a neon skull lol Today on my blog I also reference being an old lady hahah!
ReplyDeleteYES! Old people must stick together! And really, I was wholly impressed with these...
DeleteWow these are super cool! I need some!
ReplyDeleteI definitely recomment
DeleteI really love that pink one and am super curious about which indie has a dupe.
ReplyDeleteI'll never tell ;)
DeleteThose jellies are pretty cool! The purple shimmer reminds me more of Zoya Daul. I think Faye has a warmer base. I love these bottles also!
ReplyDeleteyeah, you might be right. Im not a huge zoya fan after last year, so I am not super well versed these days.
DeleteI love these bottles! That pink polish is great!
ReplyDeletethey appeal to my inner 16yo goth girl
DeleteMmhmmmm I think I'm gonna need all of them!
ReplyDeleteyaaassssssss dear.
DeleteAB Shimmer is quite pretty, although I have to agree, they do need help in the naming department. I've not been inside a Hot Topic in several years- I feel so old whenever I visit now! LOL!
ReplyDeleteoh me too. Especially with the kids in tow.
Deletewoah! They really had fun making things similar to indies! The first one is kinda like a jelly version of Poisonberry from Femme Fatale Lacquer. The pink is like Babe Watch from Delush. And the purple is like Daul from Zoya (not an indie but still similar). I'm digging these and might have to go check some out!
ReplyDeleteThey have tons of other colors...hopefully they'll all still be there when this wicked no-buy is over.
DeleteThese are all a skip for me, but the shimmer is at least something I'd wear. God, Liquid Euphorias however? Where was I back then?
ReplyDeleteEverytime I see a picture of one, I kick myself for throwing them away!
DeleteThese are interesting- I do see the resemblance to some indie polishes. I like the pink and violet ones!
ReplyDeleteme too. Those are my favorite.
DeleteI like them! I looked at their polishes a while back and I liked some of them but chose not to get any
ReplyDeleteFor the price, you can't go wrong.
DeleteI actually really like these. I think I'll stop in a Hot Topic just for these.
ReplyDeleteI cant wait to see what you choose!
