Quick and Dirty DIY Hand Scrub

Quick & Dirty Hand Scrub by Bedlam Beauty

Dry, ashy skin knows no season. Whether you are doing a quick maintenance scrub or prepping for a layer of false tan, this cheap and cheerful recipe is just what you need. I bet you already have all the ingredients right in your kitchen.
Now, if you are a long-time reader you have definitely seen this recipe before. I first briefly detailed my sugar scrub recipe back in 2013. Wow. It just proves that sugar + oil is a sure thing, no matter the season!

First, we gather the ingredients. You can fuss and fudge what you use, but basically you need a moisturizing oil and a scrubby thing. I prefer sugars to salts because my skin is on the sensitive side and sugar dissolves faster, but salt is a great exfoliator too! There aren't any measurements...I generally just use a teaspoon.

As far as oils go, use whatever you have! I like coconut oil because it tends to be solid here (it's chilly!) and therefore easier to measure. Just make sure you under measure your coconut oil because as it melts it will spread! You can also use olive oil if its handy, just pour it straight into your palm!

Ingredients
1 tsp coconut oil
1 tsp brown sugar
1 pinch kosher salt (for extra scrub)

Once you have everything out of the cabinet, mix it up! When I do this normally, I just pour everything into the palm of my hand as I measure...but that didn't make for very good pictures. For the purposes here, I just rolled my lump of coconut oil in the sugar mix until I didn't feel like doing it anymore. I imagine that you could even mix up a decent amount of this and store it in the fridge if you wanted. A deeply chilled sugar scrub might feel fab on your legs after a long day.

Once you have finished your mixing, start gently massaging it into your skin and nails. This is a physical exfoliant, so you really want to pay attention to what your body is telling you here. It should never hurt. Ever. I like to scrub lightly around my nails and fingers for about five minutes. Combining the scrubbing and massage really helps with my circulation too.

Once you feel like you've scrubbed enough, go ahead and rinse with warm water. I like to use soap afterwards because I am not crazy about the feel of coconut oil on my palms...I know, weird. But I like to rinse well then wash lightly with warm water and soap. I will break out the nail brush at this point and make sure there is no sugar stuck under the free edge of my nail.

When you are clean enough, pat your hands dry and be on your merry way!...or apply some hand lotion because you totally don't have an obsession with it. Nope.

And there you have it! It is fun to buy fancy bath products that smell like unicorn kisses and look like liquid awesomesauce...but sometimes your budget only allows for kitchen apothecary. Do you DIY your own scrubs? Do you have a recipe I should check out? Leave it below in the comments!

  1. I conveniently have all three of these things in my cupboard! Definitely trying it as soon as I run out of my Lush scrub.

    1. I definitely want to try the Lush stuff. But those prices...man. The cost keeps them squarely in the "special occasion" category.

  5. I haven't used a lot of scrubs but I know people swear by them. I just tend to oil up and use cuticle remover. I did recently use a sugar scrub I really enjoyed though!
