ELF Daily Brush Cleaner

One of the decidedly not glamorous parts of makeup is the cleanup. I hate it desperately. It is probably the reason that I have so many blending brushes. I tend to put off the cleaning until I absolutely have to...which makes the task longer...which makes me hate it more. It is a vicious circle. To keep things moderately tidy in between bathings, I use a handy spot cleaner. It helps put some space and time in between the deep cleanse.

You may remember, if you've been around for a while, that I made my own brush cleaner. It worked just fine, but it does require you to have the ingredients handy. Sometimes, you just want a ready-made product. I just wasn't feeling the DIY vibe, so I grabbed the ELF daily brush cleaner. It was $3 at my local Target and I was there...and I brought it home for a test drive.

It is pretty easy to use very travel friendly. All you need is a clean white rag, the spray, and some brushes that need a quick tidy. Thankfully, I have all of those things in spades.

Directions
No, really. It is super simple. Spray it on the clean rag. I usually use about five-seven sprays, depending on the color of makeup I am trying to clean off my brush.

Then you just gently swirl your bristles around the...wet spot. Don't apply too much pressure, you don't want to deform your bristles. I generally use the same pressure and motion to cleanse as I do to apply my makeup. It should take less than twenty seconds to clean powdered cosmetics from your brush.

Before & Afters
This post is nothing without pictures...for proof. So here we are! Its hard to see the makeup on the rag, but you can definitely see that my duofiber brush is clean and ready for action in the "after" picture. Duofibers do clean up a little faster and easier than natural bristle...which is expected. Natural fibers have more grip to them, and they don't want to give up the pigment as easily.

Buy vs DIY
Obviously, it is far easier to buy something than to make it yourself. We could get into a whole argument on consumerism here...and my "currently in purge-mode/no-buy" self would tell you that it is better to make the things instead of buy...but for this...I just don't know. I find the ELF version dries a little faster than my version. But mine has minimal scent, and ingredients that I prefer in it. I think my bristles feel softer after my DIY'd and they seem cleaner too. It all depends on whether or not you have the ingredients to make it. They are close enough that I can't really recommend one over the other.

There is only one glaring flaw in the ELF brand that will make me DIY another bottle when I finish the ELF cleaner. Let's keep in mind that I wear glasses these days...

They look pretty damned similar, don't they? You can see subtle differences, but in a drawer or on a shelf you may not see them.

Yeaaaah. One is setting spray and one is brush cleaner. One makes your makeup look skin-like and happy, and the other will taste like failure and sting your eyes. I speak from experience.

Have you tried a daily cleaner before? How did you like it? I honestly don't think I could live without them anymore.

  1. This looks like something good to try! I am terrible about cleaning my brushes! The time it takes, and then the dry time!

    1. if you do something like this after each use, you don't have to spend as long scrubbing them.

  2. "will taste like failure" haha not sure why they couldn't get different packaging for their different products.
